TPS65632: TPS65632 & TPS65631W EMI/EMC/RF considering and tips

Part Number: TPS65632
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65631W,

Hello! all,

Need your help to see if you have any reference documentation can be shared to present in this week.

In wearable products, my cusotmer has the EMI/EMC/RF issues caused by power IC for from their customer side, they would like to have relate EMI/EMC/RF design tips and discussion (Now they have used our TPS65632 & TPS65631W parts) for their FAE checking and debugging as following.

  1. Any suggestion to do preventive design for EMI/EMC/RF effect

  2. Have any trouble-shooting or guideline can be followed up for the  EMI/EMC/RF debugging

  3. Any short term or long term corrective action could be added if it’s found RF is caused by PMIC IC

Best regards,

Albert Lee

  • Hello Alfred,

For switching power regulators EMI is an important topic because of the high frequency switching and the resulting high di/dt pulsing. In order to keep the radiated energy low it is very crucial to thoroughly work out the layout.

Therefore I would highly recommend you to stick with the layout guidelines of each datasheet (Chapter 11). The general rules are:

    • Route switching currents with high di/dt on top layer and use short and wide traces. Do not route these through vias.

    • Use a pure ground-layer on the second layer and connect the thermal pad with a number of thermal vias.

    • Place input and output capacitors as close as possible to the referred pins.

These application notes will give you some more backgrounds/tips on this topic. Although these notes refer to different devices the principles remain the same for boost and inverting buck boost converter:

If your customer has started the design of the layout you can send it to me to review.

    Best Regards.

    Ilona
