Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS40211, TL4242

Hello,

We are using the LED selection tool at http://focus.ti.com/paramsearch/docs/parametricsearch.tsp?family=analog&familyId=690&uiTemplateId=NODE_STRY_PGE_T

On this page there are in total 323 products displayed. In the subfamily, there are two classes containing keyword "LED":

1.    LED driver: 67 parts

2.    White LED driver: 164 parts

What are the differences these two types?

Our requirement can be found in post Looking for a small-size, small-output, PWM-enabled LED driver. Should we look into subfamily (1) or (2)?

  • Gary,

Sorry you were finding this confusing.  Below is not a 100% perfect way to segment these, but in general:

The products under LED Driver are mainly multi-channel sink type drivers with I2C or SPI control.  There are some drivers for in the list which support general illumination (solid state LED lighting) too.

    • TLC59xx - multi-channel sink drivers
    • TPS92xxxx, UCC28xxx, TPS40211, TL4242 - general illumination (solid state lighting)
    • LMx9xx - some sink drivers, some dot/bar drivers

The products in WLED driver are mainly a mixture of solid state lighting products as well as backlight drivers.

There are efforts underway now to make these display in a clearer way on ti.com.

    Regards,

    John
