TLC5916/7 Error Detection for Resistor in Parallel with LED

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLC5916, TLC5917

Customer would like to use TLC5916 /7 in Automotive-Design.  The LED to drive is already placed on PCB with Resistor of 1k8 in series and 6k2 in parallel to the LED. Is open- and short detection in proper function in this case?

  • Hello,

The open circuit detection works by sensing the current.   If the actual current through a channel is less than 1/2 of the target current, then the device will identify this as an open circuit.

The short circuit detection (TLC5917 only) works by sensing the voltage at the OUT pin.  If the voltage here is greater than 2.6V (typ), the device will indentify this as a short circuit.  This will depend on the LED supply voltage, the forward voltage of the LED, and the current being sunk by the driver.
