TPS61165, estimating power dissipated in the device?

How do I go about estimating the power dissipated by this device under a given load condition.  My input voltage is 5v, the output voltage ~10v and the current something like 150ma (max).  Is there a rule of thumb or an equation I can use to arrive at the power dissipated so I can determine which package to use to manage any generated heat.

Thanks,
Dave.

  • Hi Dave,

    At higher duty cycles the increased on time of the FET will limit the maximum output current based on the power dissipated in the SW FET.  This will be the dominating factor of the power dissipated in the device.  The power dissipated from conduction losses can be calculated with the following equation:

    P(sw)= DC*I(ind)*RDS_ON

    Where

    DC =  duty cycle

    I(ind) = average inductor current

    RDS_ON = RDS_on of the switch FET
