TPS92513EVM what is D1?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS92513

Hi, my customer has question. Could you tell us about question?

Q: There is D1 on TPS92513EVM circuit. Why is D1 needed?

Best Regards,

tateo

  • I will check with our apps engineer, but might guess is it protects the TPS92513 in the event VIN is accidentally shorted to GND.
  • D1 is generally not required unless you want extra protection, which generally we do for an EVM so somebody doesn’t accidentally blow the IC. So yes, it is protection in the case the input is below the output. This could happen if the LED load is disconnected during operation causing the inductor energy to discharge into the output cap, or this could happen if there were a significant dip or sudden short of the input. In either case the energy at the output will try to discharge somewhere, and that will be the body diode of the internal FET unless you add another path. D1 provides the path.
  • Thank you for your reply.

If output voltage become very high than input voltage, is there risk to broken D1?

  • In most applications it is not a worry, and as long as the output capacitor isn't huge or the output voltage very high the energy is pretty low and the body diode of the part can actually handle it if it does happen. But if it ever will in an application it's a good idea to use it, particularly if it is repetative. In either case, as mentioned, the energy is pretty low so that diode should not be damaged.
