Need LED Driver Recommendation for 3 displays

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61165

Hi Team,

I need to drive the backlight LEDs for 3 different LCD screens. The three different screens have the following configurations:

My input voltage is 12V.

Ideally, I would like to have one SEPIC/Buck-Boost so I can use one setup to fit the needs of all 3 configurations separately (meaning I will never need to drive all 3 of these setups at one time, I just need one device that can be configure to the specifications of all 3 screens).

However, if there is not a SEPIC/Buck-boost that can fulfill this need, I am open to having one device that can accomodate for the boosting configurations (21V and 28V8) and another device that can meet the needs of the buck (9V).

Can you please recommend devices that will do the trick?

Thank you!!

Jared

  • Jared,

Look at the TPS61165.  This should be able to drive all three configurations.  There is a SEPIC example in the datasheet with similar VIN/VOUT range.

    Thanks

  • I had a look at the data sheets, and they are not -actually- as shown in your diagram... the larger display (sharp) appear to be common-anode, with separate cathode lines for each series group of LEDs, thother display with 9 LEDs appears to have a parallel-serial connection for the LEDs... maybe they have ballast resistors, or something, otherwise, driving LEDs directly, as shown, almost guarantees trouble with uneven illumination/'current hogging'..

I did a parts lookup that shows several possibilities for the 6-channel device, and could also work for the single series connection, maybe a bit of overkill, but parts commonality is good ;-)

A crazy idea, but, for the 9V9 version, as several of these devices have programmable current sinks, it-could-, -maybe-, be possible to bypass the boost, in some way, and just use the current sinks (in parallel), as there is not too much voltage headroom from 12 V to 9V9??
