TPS61165: Could you tell me about "LED driver without ringing"?

Part Number: TPS61165

Hi team.

My customers are considering on the assumption that TPS61165.

However, since TPS61165 is an asynchronous rectification method,

Ringing as shown in the figure below occurs and it becomes a noise source,

so customers are looking for something that does not Ringing.

I myself looked for a synchronous rectifying boost LED driver that matched the specifications below but could not find a conforming product.

So, if you know, can you tell me about conforming products?

Also, in the absence of conforming products, is there a technique to drive the LED using a normal synchronous boost converter?

Best regards,

Pokkun (Masumi Sekiguchi)

  • Hi Masumi,
When the Boost converter operates in DCM mode, I'm afraid we can't eliminating this ringing with TPS61165.
With a synchronous boost converter, the ringing is still there in DCM mode. And I see the output voltage is around 20V, usually the benifit of a synchronous boost, which is efficiency, is not that remarkable at this output voltage level, a schottky diode is enough. Why the customer wants that?

    Best regards
    Caryss
  • Thank you for your answer.

The concern of this Ringing is because of that "that may become a Noise source."

    Therefore,
if we can propose either "Proposing a replacement another device that will not be in discontinuous mode" or "adjust to suppress ringing with peripheral circuit (resistance / capacitor)",Customers are likely to consider TI products as they are.
※For the replacement another device that will not be in discontinuous mode,
I searched for a synchronous rectification type device, but it is the present situation that did not exist.

So, I must propose something at all costs.

    Could you advise me?

  • I'm afraid we don't have such device either not ringing or synchronous. Actually the ringing enegey is quite low, should be low risk.

    Caryss.
