TPS61193-Q1: Fault differentiation of 'Open LED' and 'Shorted LED'

Part Number: TPS61193-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LP8860-Q1, , LP8863-Q1

Hello Team,

is there a possibility to differentiate between 'Open LED' and Shorted LED'? There is only a fault pin which signals both possible failures.

Any additional information which could help to detect which failure happens would be helpful.

Many Thanks

Josef

  • Hello Josef,

As you mention the fault scheme of TPS61193-Q1 would trigger a flag when open and/or short LEDs event/s are detected (Fault pin would go low). However, since TPS61193-Q1 doesn't have the level of communication that other TI higher level ICs have you wouldn't be able to tell the difference of what type of fault is being detected by relying on solely the feedback of the IC. Devices such as LP8860-Q1 and LP8863-Q1 would allow you to understand specifically what type of fault is being detected.

Of course, alternatively if you really need to differentiate between open/short faults with TPS61193-Q1 one obvious way would be by monitoring current/voltage behavior of LED strings...but this is something you probably have already assessed.

    Kind Regards,

    David
