TLC59116: What's the behavior of TLC59116 when output LED short ?

Part Number: TLC59116

Dear Team,

My customer want to know what's the behavior of TLC59116 when LED short.

Two kind of condition:

1. 5V as VLED and connect 1 LED to current sink pin

2. 15V as VLED and connect and 4LED connect to current sink pin.

Thanks

Shaq.

  • Hi, Shaquille,

As you descriped, it seems you are asking about the OUT short to VLED.

Since TLC59116 is constant current sink, if OUT is short to 5V or 15V, the OUT still sinks constant current as programed.

But the power consumption will increase a lot as the voltage drop on OUT increases.

Once the IC is over temperature, TSD will happen.

  • Hi Kenneth,

    Thanks for your prompt reply.
For my understanding, if we take 5V, 20mA as example.
When short happened, there will have 0.1W been apply on device and generate heat?

BTW, when device detect LED open, device will turn that rail off?

    Thanks
    Shaq.
  • Hi, Shaquille,

You are correct about the power consumption.

For LED open-circuit detection, the error status can be read out as an error flag through the registers EFLAG1 and EFLAG2 as you can see from 9.3.1 of datasheet. But no futher action will be taken and the channel is still ON.
