VCSEL driving and photo diode detection question for facial recognition on smart phone

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM3643, OPA2333, LM3644

Due to Iphone X, now facial recognition is a hot application on smart phone.

VCSEL can be a light source for facial recognition, and this kind of product in on marketing as well.

We found the VCSEL product include a photo diode inside, the function of this photo diode is for cover-lens crack detection, due to photocurrent is different when cover-lens is crack or not.

We can use general flash driving IC to drive VCSEL but we do not find any suitable method to detect photocurrent.

My question is if TI will announce a new driver IC which including the function of photocurrent detection in the future?

Btw, I also found the VCSEL driver on TI website, but it is for ToF appliaciton, it is too complex and too expensive for facial recognition application on smart phone.

  • Hi Tobby,
Yes, We do have some Flash led driver has been used for smartphone facial recognition. LM3643 and LM3644 is very suitable for this application with IR mode which is very fast. For detection the current, you can add a tiny amplifier OPA2333 to monitor the current. Some customer has adopted this way.
