TPS79801-Q1 for LED driving

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS7A4001

Could the TPS79801-Q1 be used the same way as TPS7A4001 for LED Array driving?

In TPS7A4001 datasheet, Figure 14 & Figure 15, the FB pin is tied directly to the OUT pin and Rset is used to set the current through the LED chain. I am also not clear whether the Enable pin on the TPS79801-Q1 can be pulsed, say at 1KHz like it seems is possible on the TPS7A4001.

As an example, I like to connect 9 LEDs in series that have a 4V forward voltage drop to a +42V supply and use the TPS79801-Q1 to limit the current to about 20 mA (Rset = 64 Ohms), then PWM the Enable line to further limit the average current through the LED chain. I like the TPS79801-Q1 over the TPS7A4001 because it can operate from a lower input voltage and requires lower capacitance on input/output for stability.

I am enclosing a slightly modified Figure 14 to show how I like to use the TPS79801-Q1.

Thanks for the feedback.

  • Hi Marek,

This connection should be OK, but I will need some more information about your application and confirm with our design engineers.
