LP3982 - reverse current protection

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LP3982

Hi

When reading through the datasheet of LP3982, nothing is written about reverse current protection. I can read that the pass element inside the regulator is a mos type, so I expect a parasitic diode in the reverse direction. But is there such parasitic diode, and can it protect the regulator from reverse current flow from output to input?

  •  In LP3982 the pass-element is PMOS, so yes, there is a parasitic diode from OUT pin to IN pin that will allow reverse current.

Some limited amount of reverse current through the parasitic diode will not necessarily damage the device, but there could be side effects to circuit behavior.

Most common fix is to insert a series diode on the input side to block reverse current at the IN pin. This only works if you have enough input voltage headroom in the normal operating mode so the diode drop does not affect Vout.
