LP2985 - Improving Performance at Light Loads

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LP2985

I plan on using several LP2985's in a low-noise analog design; some of these rails will have loads <1mA at times. My suspicion is that at very low loads, transient and noise performance might suffer since the LDO has "nothing to work with", to put it loosely.

Would adding a few mA of load bias tend to improve load transient and noise performance?

Thanks,

  • Bryan,

The internal feedback resistors draw enough current to keep the LDO busy. Other than that, the LDO cannot sink current so a little extra load could be helpful. Most of the LDO noise comes from the band gap reference which has a bypass pin on the LP2985 to help that.
