TPS715xx LDO ESD rating, does it support negative voltages?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS715

Can you please clarify if the TPS715xx can handle a negative ESD event?  The datasheet doesn’t
say +/- for the ESD rating, it only shows a positive value for ESD and shows an Abs Max range down to just -0.3V.  The customer has added a TVS to help with the negative ESD event, but it doesn't clamp as low as -0.3V, it's closer to -10V.  Can it handle
-10V at 100-200mA for a few microseconds?

Thanks, Jason

  • Hi Jason,

Until the new datasheet standard it was common practice to only state the magnitude of the ESD rating.  It has only been since February 2014 that we have stated the ESD rating as +/-.  TPS715 has an ESD rating of +/- 2kV (HBM) and +/- 500V (CDM); however, this should not be confused with the Absolute Maximum Ratings of the specific pins.  While we have rated the device to survive an ESD event (typically less than 1.5ns), but we have not rated the device to survive a sustained negative voltages.

    Very Respectfully,

    Ryan
