TPS74012 regulator

Hi All,

is it necessory to give  bias voltage to TPS74012 when we are using it in fixed operation mode. what happens if we did not give a voltage to bias pin

  • Hi Dinesh,

A bias voltage is required for this device.

The bias voltage is used on high current devices to allow for a really low dropout specification, reducing the power dissipation across the LDO.

An example of this with the TPS74012:

    If Vin=Vbias, Vin(min) = 1.2V+1.6V = 2.8V. Pdiss = 1.6V*1.5A = 2.4W are dissipated across the device.

    But if Vbias = 3.3V, Vin(min) = 1.2V+0.3V = 1.5V. Pdiss = 0.3V*1.5A = 0.45W are dissipated across the LDO, nearly a 2W reduction in power dissipation.

    Regards,

    David
