TLV70233 Output Capacitor

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV702

Hi TIers,

One of my customer want to used the TLV70233 to convert 5V to 3.3V ,which supply for the MCU.  Customer has to place a 100uF electrolytic capacitor for the output capacitor instead of 1uF datasheet recommend in some special usage.

Could please check if it is Ok or any potential issue ?

             Thanks!

  • Hi Jason,

A 100uF electrolytic capacitor is rather large and not typical for this kind of device. Our characterization primarily focused on ceramic capacitors around the 1uF range. Please note that ESR should be less than 200mOhms per the Input and Output Capacitor Requirements section of the datasheet.

    Very Respectfully,
    Ryan
  • Hi Ryan:
    Thanks for your reply.
If the ESR of the electrolytic capacitor is less than 200mOhms, is it Ok for this case because the ESR is key point for the selection.
  • Hi Jason,

The key concern is ESR; however, you will also want to evaluate your specific application conditions with a prototype. 100uF is a large capacitor for this type of device. It will effect startup time and shutdown of the LDO. Prototyping the application will be the best tool to help you determine if TLV702 with the large electrolytic capacitor is best for your application.

    Very Respectfully,
    Ryan
