LM140K: Drop-In Replacement?

Part Number: LM140K
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM340, UA78

I'm wanting to replace many (old part number) uA7812KC & LM340-12KC voltage regulators.

Is the new LM140K-12  a drop-in replacement, or are there other circuit considerations?

  • Hello Jeffrey,
What grade of product are looking for? Commercial in plastic, commercial in a hermetic package or military?
In general LM140, LM340, LM78 and uA78 are drop in replacements for each other but there might be some differences in parametric limits or temperature ranges.
Sometimes they are listed as 1A or 1.5A parts, but in all cases the only testing at 1.5A is load regulation. All other testing is done at lower loads.

The difference is in the package. The LM140K-12 is a commercial part in a TO-3 metal can.
uA7812KC and LM340-12KC are not currently valid part numbers, and I suspect there might be a typo.
There is an uA7812CKxx part. The CK indicates that the part is in a TO-220 package and the xx is different variations on the TO-220.

It would be important to know the exact part number you want to replace to recommend the proper part.
  • Thanks for the reply. I have the information I need now.
I now realize the parts I asked about are no longer in production, but they were not typos.
