Q: REG101 Output Short Survivablity by 581446
Customer is requesting reliability info on the REG101. They need to know if they can apply a short circuit to the output of the REG101. Seems like the device should have internal protections but they would like to get the opinion of the factory. See customer comments below:

Per the datasheet, the REG101 is designed to operate into a short circuit condition indefinite amount of time. If the resulting power dissipation results in the junction temperature staying below 125deg C, there will not be any affect on reliability. However, if the IC junction temperature is continuously operated above 125deg C, reliability may be affected. Per the customer's testing that shows a 40 deg C rise above ambient, the design will be ok as long at the ambient temperature is less than 85 deg C.
