TPS61220 reverse input protection

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61220

I understand that the TPS61220 does not have reverse input protection for the case where batteries are put in backwards. I have tried this and found that the TPS61220 gets very hot, but when the batteries are put in correctly the regulator goes back to working again. I see that the part has thermal overload protection. So will this always be the case, that it will go back to working after reversing the input, because of the thermal overload protection? Thanks in advance.

  • no. the over temperature protection can't prevent the current flowing through the internal diode of the internal low side mosfet when the input votlage reverse.

the TPS61220 survived in your experiments may be that the current through internal diode is not high enough. and we can't guarantee the device always survived.

i suggest you add a reverse input protection circuit. you can refer this application note:http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slva315/slva315.pdf

    thanks
