TPS54160 Design Procedure

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54160

I was hoping to follow the 'Design Procedure' in the TPS54160 datasheet to select the components for my power supply design. However I have become lost very early on.

In section 9.2.2 'Detailed Design Procedures', it says the first step is to decide on the switching frequency. I understand the reasoning behind maximising the frequency, and the two conditions which create limits on the maximum.

However, when I jump to Eq.12 and Eq.13, as it suggests, I find that the calculations depend on some of the parameters I would like to determine. I have specifications I want to achieve: 48V input, 12V output, <100mVpp ripple, output current 0.1-1.0 A. But these equations require the inductance and resistance of the output inductor, and voltage drop across the diode.

Am I approaching this problem incorrectly?

Thanks for any guidance you can give,

Ian

  • You can simplify it somewhat. For eq 12 Fmax = Vout/(Vin *130E-9) = 1.92 Mhz and eq 13 Fmax = (8 * Vosc) / (130E-9*48) = 640kHz for Voosc = 0.5 V. I would probably start with 500kHz switching frequency for your application, then work thru the numbers from there.
