LM2596S-ADJEVM: Vout drops when applied to load

Part Number: LM2596S-ADJEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM2596

Hi,

I am using the LM2596S-ADJEVM with 5V output. When I connect to my load my voltage drops to about 4.1-4.3V. My load is a Raspberry Pi 3, which needs 5V and at start up pulls about 250mA. At most the Pi will use 2A. I was having this issue while trying to breadboard the regulator circuit and read that it is better tested using a PCB, which is why I had order the EVM. What could be the issue?

Thanks for any help!

  • Hello Austin,

What voltage are you supplying to the LM2596? The EVM is set-up for a default 5V output but if you read the EVM user page it recommends feeding the EVM at least 7V.

If I had to guess you might be feeding the EVM 5V and as result from your source to the output you are seeing the voltage drop down to the 4.1V -4.3V you are seeing at the output.
