LM46001-Q1: EMI in different conduction modes on the LM4600x

Part Number: LM46001-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM46001

Hello,

is there an EMI disadvantage when using the LM4600x in DCM instead of CCM? CCM is FPWM right? So CCM should be better regarding EMI compared to DCM.

Can the circuit be tweaked (switchin frequency, component values...) to operate longer in the CCM mode even at lighter loads?

Thank you very much in advance!

Kind regards

  • When operating in DCM the power levels are small, by definition.  So the EMI may be less due to the lower currents.  Also, this device will fold the switching frequency back when in DCM.  This should also help the high frequency EMI.

Unfortunately, since EMI depends on many other circuit parameters, including layout, there is no way to state that operating in either mode will have better EMI performance.

The only way is to test the application in an environment that is as close as possible to the final production situation.

  • Thank you very much for your answer. Do you have an application note which explains the foldback feature in more detail?
  • The data sheet for the LM46001 or LM4360x should give an explanation for this mode.
