TPS40428: load current

Guru 29690 points
Part Number: TPS40428
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CSD95378BQ5MC

Hi Team,

The datasheet shows TPS40428 (DCDC controller) supports load current as high as 120A.

Is there any background for the value 120A?
Should I consider 160A isn't supported even if thermal improvement on the board ?

Best Regards,
Yaita / Japan disty

  • Hi Yaita,

TPS40428 is a driveless controller. It provides PWM signal to power stage like CSD95378B and etc.

The current rating is totally decided by the power stage, not controller.

If the power stage can handle 40A per phase, then yes, the total current can be 160A for 4phase design.

    Thanks

    Qian

  • Hi Qian-san,

Thank you for your reply. I understood.

Yes, my customer considers to use TPS40428 with CSD95378BQ5MC (Smart Power Stage).
It seems CSD95378BQ5MC handles 60A continuous current, can the total load current be 240A for 4phase design on desk calculation?

    Best Regards,
    Yaita

  • Hi Yaita,

Usually the current rating that the power stage can handle is limited by the thermal performance and efficiency.

For CSD95378B, it is reasonable to set phase current below 30A in real application.

If the phase current is above 30A, it needs to be verified if there is thermal problem at worst condition (highest ambient temperature, full load, maximum Vin).

What's current rating of customer's project?

    Thanks

    Qian

  • Hi Qian-san,

    I appreciate for your support.

Some new projects of DCDC converter module is under consideration from my customer and current rating doesn't have decied yet.
He is studying some device specification at this time.
Please let me contct you again if I need your support.

    Best Regards,
    Yaita
