TPS62160: Load test cause damage to IC

Part Number: TPS62160
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61260

Hi,

TPS61260,

input = 7.5V

output = 3.6V

The circuit was powered up first, then loaded with 200mA. After a few times, the device is damaged and the output voltage become 6.3V. If we lower the input to 6V, the output will become 4.8V. The output has become Vin - 1.2V.

1. Any idea what could have caused this?

2. Why the output always 1.2V lower than input after the IC damged?

Thanks.

  • Hi YY,

    Unfortunately, this is not the type of information which is useful in debugging. We need to see waveforms of the 'few times'.

    A common form of damage is from an input over-voltage. I suggest looking at the power supply used for this testing to see if it overshoots at startup, etc.

    You can also replace the IC on the board to make sure that it is the IC that is damaged and not something else.

    Finally, is this the EVM or your own PCB? If your own PCB, you can post the layout here for a check. Bad layout can destroy a DC/DC.
  • Hi YY,

    Were you able to obtain more details from the customer?
