LM5010: LM5010 and wide output current range

Part Number: LM5010
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5088, , LM5085

Hi TI,

we are using the LM5010 in an application with 30V - 50V input and 24V output voltage. We have a wide range of output current from 1mA to 1A. The output voltage gets too low with low output current and low input voltage. Is this type of regulator not optimal for this range of output current? Would LM5088 be a better choice?

It could be helpful if the webbench also had an option for output current range that could guide us to the best controller with respect to this demand.

  • The output voltage should not drop significantly at light loads.

So you have a schematic you can share please?

    Thanks.

  • Hi TI,

we have designed the output voltage from LM5010 to be 24V.

At light loads (3kOhm and more), the output oscillates slowly when input voltage is falling. The oscillation starts when input voltage falls below 24V. Do you know if there is any workaround to prevent this? We would like the outputvoltage from LM5010 to fall in same way as the input voltage.

At a load of 100ohm it is working perfect.

  • Unfortunatley the device is trying to regulate to a voltage higher than Vin, as it does so, the device will operate in its Toff min specification. As such it will not be stable. I suggest using another device that is capable of a duty cycle of 100%. For your 1A load requirement I suggest considering the LM5085, if you need the wide Vin range of the LM5010.

    Hope this helps?

    David.
