Using the LP3913 when battery is absent

Hi-

I have a design that uses the LP3913 PMIC, to run off a LiPo battery which gets recharged when USB power is present.

I was expecting to also be able to operate my board from USB power when the battery is absent. I have tried to do so on a couple of boards (no battery, plug USB cable) and they didn't like it. I suspect the LP3913 is damaged.

So, is it the case that LP3913 should not be used when no battery is present ? Or should I suspect something else ?
