TPS65217 question for no USB power and no Battery pack

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65217, USB2ANY

Hello Janice,

I'm sorry for my late response because my TPS65217C EVM was broken
due to miss operation and I ordered new EVM.
I got the new EVM last week and I checked TPS65217C wakeup behavior
with nRESET button pushing and releasing when VBAT is connected to
AC.
The result was that SYS was not shut down after 5 sec with PWR_EN=L.

I wrote the current problem of my customer again.
 1. My customer is using TPS65217C for TI CPU.
 2. They are using AC input only. They are not using USB input. USB is connected to GND.
 3. They don't use battery. So they are using same connection as Figure 56
    on page76 of TPS217(SLVSB64G) datasheet.
 4. The current problem is that TPS65217C can not wakeup by nRESET button
    push and release(Level is H -> L -> H) when AC terminal voltage is 4.65V or less.
 5. AC voltage is goes down to 4.65V or less once, after that even if the voltage come back to 5.0V,
TPS65217C can not wakeup. When AC voltage is 5.10V or more, then the device wakeup by
    nRESET button.

So could you please advice me how to wakeup TPS65217C by nRESET button
when AC terminal voltage is 4.3~4.65V?

 Best regards,
 Kazuya Nakai

  • Kazuya,

For similar issues please use the same thread. Did you try my suggestion from the previous post: e2e.ti.com/.../431982

  • Hello Janoice,

    Thank you for your advice.

I tried to tie BATT and AC together. Then SYS always on regardless PWREN level (H or L).

Our customer wants to shut down SYS output when PWREN=L.

Could you please advice me how to wakeup TPS65217C by nRESET button
when AC terminal voltage is 4.3~4.65V?

Thank you again and best regards,
  • Kazuya,

Here is what I've replicated on an EVM in the lab, please let me know if this is what you have done:
    1) Short AC and VBAT input pins together
    2) Set input voltage to 4.3V, turn on my power supply and confirm the device is on and in ACTIVE mode by measuring VLDO1
    3) Press nRESET button for ~8 seconds, VLDO1 rail turns off, and returns to 1.8V when button is released.

  • Also ensure that the USB2ANY is connected, this is what provides the external 3.3V for PWR_EN, PWR_EN pin is connected to 3P3 pin the entire experiment. Please also ensure that jumper settings are all in default position, as seen in TPS65217 EVM user guide on TI.com
  • Hello Janice,
Thank you very much for the confirming in your lab.
I executed the follwoing thing and I inserted the result.

    1) Short AC and VBAT input pins together -> I did.

    2) Set input voltage to 4.3V, turn on my power supply and confirm the device is on and in ACTIVE mode by measuring VLDO1 -> When power supply is turned on, VLDO1 sometimes didn't power up.

    3) Press nRESET button for ~8 seconds, VLDO1 rail turns off, and returns to 1.8V when button is released.
-> When nRESET button is pressed after VLDO powered up, VLDO1 is turned off as soon as the button is pressed. When nRESET button is released, VLDO1 returned to 1.8V.
Then PWR_EN is connected 3p3 pin and the pin is powered from 3.3V external power supply.

Our customer want TPS65217 to OFF mode. So they cannot use this way because SYS is always on
and TPS65217 is not in OFF mode.

I couldn't find where USB2ANY is. Is USB2ANY any jumper name or pin mane on EVM?

Please allow me to tell you again what our customer want to realize with TPS65217.
    1. Their system uses "AC" input only.
    2. TPS65217 supplys several lane power to AM335x.
    3. They want the TPS65217 to wake up by "nRESET" button pressing.
    4. SYS and VLDO1 are powered on by the wake up.
    5. AM335X sets "PWR_EN" to H level to keep TPS65217 in ACTIVE mode after SYS and VLDO1
    are powered on.
    6. After all tasks are finished, AM335X sets TPS65217 to OFF mode with writing "1" to OFF bit
and sets "PWR_EN" of TPS65217 to L level.

But when "AC" voltage is 4.6V or less, nRESET signal does work correctly.
Our customer wants TI to give them anyway to wake up TPS65217 by nRESET signal.
Could you please give us another recommendation?
    Your reply would be appreciated.

    Regards,
  • Hello Janice,

Can I talk with you off line?

If your answer is yes, could you please send me your e-mail address?
(Can you get my e-mail address?)

I'd like to tell you about our customer condition detaily to solve the customer problem.

    Best regards,
  • Kazuya,

The functionality you are looking for is best done with the push button, by supplying power through the BAT pin the device will not turn on until the push button is pressed. We can discuss this further, I've sent you a private message.
