TPS65910A3 Damaged when Shorted to Gnd

Dear TI Folks,

Recently my customer feedback that TPS65910A3 is damaged when the out is accidentally shorted. When checked against the specification, almost all the LDO outputs have Short Circuit Protection via the current limitation but for the SMPS outputs, no protection mechanism is mentioned.

May I confirm that when the SMPS output of TPS65910A3 is shorted, is it intended to be damaged?

May I confirm that when the LDO output of TPS65910A3 is shorted, will it be damaged or will it survive due to the current limiting Short Circuit Protection + thermal protection

Regards,

Weiren

  • weiren,

SMPS have short circuit protection and when any rail is shorted it is protcect by shortcircuit protection and when ths chip temp goes higher then expected it is also protected.

  • Hi Puneet,

    Thanks for your reply.

Is the protection feature mentioned in the TPS65910A3's datasheet? My customer claims that when the output is accidentally shorted, the chip is damaged. And this is repeatable with other units.

Please help to confirm, we may need to proceed to trigger a FA to understand why the IC protection mechanism is not triggered.

    Regards,

  • Hi Puneet,

I checked with TI FAE and he highlighted that the SMPS's current limitation on the high side and low side MOSFET served as protection mechanism for the SMPS. Thanks for your help.
