TPS2490 - surge immunity

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2490

Hi all,

Would you mind if we ask TPS2490?

We are looking for Hotswap Controller device which is tolerant of surge 3kV.
Of cource, we guess that there is no this device.
On the TPS2490EVM, to improve surge immunity, is it needed to add surge suppressor?
If you have some information, could you let us know it?

Kind regards,

Hirotaka Matsumoto

  • Hello again Hirotaka-san,

You are correct that the TPS2490 will require external surge suppression to survive. TI generally will use a TVS between VCC and GND to clamp input inductive spikes only but for lightning surge much higher energy devices must be used such as MOV, Tranzorb, GDT, etc. These devices will connect not only from line-ground but from line-earth/chassis and ground-earth/chassis. You first must know which industry standard, install class, and surge levels (both voltage, current, pulse width) apply to the application and then design custom protection. It can be a challenging task.

TI has an application note for POE lightning surge and much of this can apply to many telecom based hotswap applications. The link is shown below:

Thank you for your prompt and kindness reply!
    Ok we got it !
And, we suggest ourcsutomer to use surge  suppressor.

    Kind regards,
