CSD18533Q5A N-Channel NexFET Normal Operating Temp

Hello! We're putting together our first motor control board with a DRV8301 feeding a bunch of these FETs, and looking over the data sheet I didn't see what the normal continual-duty chip temperature should be.. only a "max/min" range of operating conditions.

With a room temp around 70F, I'm using an infrared temp sensor gun and seeing chip surface temperature at around 137-140 degrees F.

Is this normal?  We're prototyping with the TI DRV8301 eval board, so there are no heat sinks.

All info appreciated!

    It is not uncommon at all for FETs to heat up. Switching and conduction losses in the FET will inherently cause the FET to heat up. How much is just a matter of how much current you are driving the motor with and what frequency you are operating at. 

    If this increase in temperature is too much for you / your application, you could always try a lower Rdson FET. 

    The CSD18531Q5A is a little lower and has the exact same footprint. You could also try the CSD18532Q5B or CSD18540Q5B, which can also serve as lower Rdson pin for pin replacements.
