How should I size a supply for the Vdd rail? What is the expected current and transients? The datasheet states Idd during operation is 8.5mA (nominal) which seems low.

Michael,
The IDD current is very low for these power stage devices, as the NexFET technology inside allows for very low gate charge MOSFETs. Note the conditions - VDD =5V, DC = 50%, Fsw = 500kHz and note that the current IDD will increase as a funciton of VDD and frequency.
When choosing a power supply, you can base this on your estimated IDD current and add some margin. Our applications engineer though 200mA current capability would be more than enough to supply the required IDD.
