Hi I have used web bench tool to convert 48V to 12 V 12A supply. It sugggested to use TPS40170 switcher. It uses N channel FETs on the high as well as low side. Can somebody help me to understand why it is recommended to use specifically N channel FETs at this design?

N channel MOSFETs are better than P channel. For the same size, you get always better rds on for an N channel. So, even that it is more difficult to drive them (you need a boost circuit to build a voltage that is more positive than the output), N channel MOSFETs are preferred.

The reason of why they are better is intrinsic to the physics of the semiconductor, N material has higher mobility than P.
