PTH08080WAH soldering recommendation

I just heard about a board vendor cutting off leads of the PTH08080WAH and was wondering if there are soldering guidelines or documents that could be given to them for reference.

    PTH08080WAH i s a through hole power module. The average pin length is 0.140".

    We have  no specific solder recommendation for through-hole pins. The wave solder temperature is not to exceed 260°C for longer than 5 seconds.

    TI does not recommend lead  trimming or cutting of power module through hole pins at any time. Any .

    Any  lead trimming at any time may  physcially  damage the  module to pin attach  solder joint .

  • We've recently experienced one of the pins on PTH08080WAH modules reflowing where it connects to the module's circuit board, leaving non-compliant joints that we've had to rework. The part was soldered on a selective soldering process that uses 285C for 1.5 seconds. Though this exceeds the recommended temperature of 260C, the duration is much shorter than the 5 second limit. Only one of the 5 connections reflowed on approximately 20-25 modules, and it was always the same pin (the one to the right of the TI logo).

    Does TI have any plans to use a solder for connecting the pins that reflows at a higher temperature than commonly used lead free compositions?

    PTH08080W has been using only  SAC solder since its release.
    The absolute maximum PTH08080WAH   module body  and pin temperature  is limited to 260°C for no more than 5 seconds . The 285°C exceeds this maximum limit.
