DCP021515: IC burn out problem

Part Number: DCP021515

Hello all,

As title, my client used DCP021512 to be the isolated power for gate drive optocoupler, but it burnt out at test.

Vin:15V ,  Vout:15V,  Iout:0.025A

The schematic is as below:

Thanks & Best regards

  • DCP02 series cannot be used with IGBT gate driver circuitry in DC continuous mode or frequency controlled with voltages exceeding SELV limit. (m See

See DCP02 Isolation statement from DCP02 specification paragraph 8.3 Description Isolation attached.6558.Pages from dcp02spec. Isolation statement. pdf.pdf

Isolation Voltage applications. For a device that has no specific safety agency approvals (operational isolation), the continuous voltage that can be applied across the part in normal operation is less than 42.4 VRMS, or 60 VDC. Ensure that both input and output voltages maintain normal SELV limits.

The isolation test voltage represents a measure of immunity to transient voltages.

WARNING does not use this device as an element of the safety Isolation system when SELV is exceeded.

External continuous voltage difference limits are defined as voltages as measured between VIN (-) and Vout (-) ground). The converter is designed as ground fault isolation device. It is not designed to operate with a continuous voltage isolation barrier at greater than 60VDC. The isolation 1 second 1kv production test validates only the magnetic coating separation between primary and secondary transformer wire.

The maximum potential difference ( Vin(+) to Vout ground ) as referenced to  a common ground is limited to continuous 60V DC or 42V Peak AC transient between Vin(-) and Output ( ground) . . The primary and secondary transformer wires will contact each other separated by magnet wire over-coating. The transformer wires are single coating material and not dual coated. The UL listing, E199929, voltage limits are SELV or 60VDC continuous or 42V transient peak.

Specification DCP02 Electrical Characteristics paragraph 7.5 identifies under isolation limits maximum Continuous working voltage

  • Hello Tom,

Thank for your help. DCP02 series are not suitable for gate driver circuit.
It is only for supplying signal chain circuit. So if my client need to isolate power for gate driver, but isolated DC/DC converter has been removed from the options due to their power tree is too complicated.
Do you have any other suggest for it using TI solutions ?

    Thank for your kindly help.
  • HI Feng:
There is no solutions for isolation converters which can be safely be used for IGBT gate drive circuitry.
    Thanks
    Tom
  • Hi Tom:

Do you suggest the Transformer driver SN6505 for isolation converters for IGBT?

Otherwise, what kind of circuit topology could be safely used for IGBT gate drive?

    Thank for your kindly help.

    Ben,

  • SN6505  is an excellent isolated IGBT solution if the Vin range  is 2.2V to 5.5V maximum limit. Vout can be set to higher Vout  using fig 50 in the SN65050  and the appropriate transformer.

We do not have any other 15 Vin solutions .

    Tom
