TPS82697: TPS82697

Part Number: TPS82697
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS62088, TPS62801, TPS82084

We have been using TI TPS series switching regulators in our module. The datasheet for the TPS82697  in section 12.4 contains a plot of internal capacitor failure rate vs temperature that shows 3.6V bias 85C lifetime as 10,000hrs reducing to ~5000 hrs at 90C. We will need to put the modules through 2000 hrs life test at 85C case and maybe asked to continue to 5000hrs for some customers so this capacitor lifetime is going to be a limiting factor for us.

We will be using 1x TPS 82670 and 1x TPS 82697 per module

Please confirm (1) that the data in the 82697 datasheet is correct and applicable to both parts (2) is there an option to supply devices with better rated capacitors? (3) Is there an alternative part with better 85C lifetime?

  • Hi Richard,

Let me double check these graphs and see if other modules perform better on this parameter. Your values are indeed what the figure shows.

As well, we have the very small, discrete TPS62088 and TPS62801 which can be used.
  • Hi Richard,

We don't have any modules (besides the larger TPS82084) with more reliable caps for your application. The 2 discrete ICs I mentioned can make a very small solution as well.

To provide an easier comparison and to add some data at the common 3.3Vin operating point, the expected lifetime of the capacitors (from the capacitor vendor's data) is:
    ~10k hours at 3.6Vin and 85 C
    ~6k hours at 3.6Vin and 90 C
    ~14k hours at 3.3Vin and 85 C
    ~8.5k hours at 3.3Vin and 90 C

All of those values are above your 5k hour requirement.
