Using switching voltage regulator as current limiter

I have searched in vain for a reference design or ap note regarding using a switching voltage regulator to limit current.  Want to limit current to a solenoid after it is actuated to maintain full in position.  Nominal 24 volts at .5 amps required, 42 volts available at input.

  • Hi Jeff,

The closest device we have to limit current in this voltage range is the TPS2660. You would need to put a protection Schottky diode on the output to protect the device against the negative voltage associated with switching an inductive load, but other than that, the device supports a current limit of 500mA and voltage up to 60V. Do you think a device like this could work?
