LM5575 vs. LM5005

Hello,

I am looking for 5VDC@1.5A step down switcher with high voltage input. Most of the spec for LM5575 (1.5A, 16pin) and LM5005 (2.5A, 20pin) look the same. Yet, LM5575 is more expensive. Am I missing some important feature or difference is due to volumes/marketing etc.? i.e. Why would I choose LM5575 over LM5005? There is enough real state for larger package.

    If LM5005 meets your requirements you should go with LM5005. Let me know if you need any help with LM5005 in your application.

    The subtle differences that are between the two parts are that the LM5575 is qualified as an automotive grade part and the LM5005 is not. Also the LM5575 belongs to the Simple Switcher family. Just as Vijay mentioned, if LM5005 fits your needs then you could go for it. If you need any help with LM5575, you could ask for it in the Simple Switcher forum. 

    Also, both the parts are enabled on Webench. Therefore you could get design help from the software too. The difference there being that the LM5575 is fully supported in Webench. By that I mean that it has the additional Thermal Simulation and also the Build It option that other ICs do not have. Hopefully this put more light on your question.

    I do have follow up question.

    Even though only 5V @ 1.5A is needed for LM5005 output, Webench is only selecting the inductors with saturation current above the LM5005 current limit (4.25A). Parts are getting very large/expensive as required inductance is going up with reduced current. In same time diode current rating does go down.

    What are the consequence of using the inductor with lower saturation current (for example, 2A)? Would overload increase risk for component damage?

  • Hi Darko,

    It seems you can use inductor with lower saturation current (In your case 2.0A-2.3A as you need 1.5A @ output). Just make sure about the DC series resistance needs to be minimum of yours selected inductor.
