Constant Current Laser Driver with Modulation

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM3406

Looking to us an adjustable Simple Switcher as a current source for a laser diode.  The application requires that the laser be blanked and I was curious about how fast the enable on/off pin of the regulator would be able to do this.  The application would include a low value current shunt and amplifier to measure the current output and adjust the regulator.

The forward drop of the diode would be somewhere between 3 and 6 volts, forward current being no more than 2 amps.

One requirement of the regulator is that it not have a softstart due to the need for a clean blanking signal.

Any suggestion on a specific regulator and or supporting parts is appreciated.

  • Hello,

The toggling speed of the EN pin will be limited by the soft-start on pretty much all of our regulators. All of our regulators (SIMPLE SWITCHER) have at least a preset soft-start time because these devices are all voltage regulators.

What you might be able to use would be a LED driver. LED drivers are inherently current regulators, e.g. LM3406. Using the DIM Pin, you can turn the part on and off at a very high rate.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,
