Reg:LMR61428 Efficiency

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMR61428

Hi,

I am planning to use LMR61428 boost regulator in my design, I had seen conflict information on efficiency of the regulator at datasheet and web-bench tool

the conditions

at Input voltage =2.0V

output Voltage = 3.3V

Output current = 0.1A

datasheet graph shows below efficiency below 80%

where as web-bench tool shows efficiency above 85%

can any please confirm which one to consider?

  • Hi,

The efficiency will depend on the choice of switching frequency and component selection. If the two designs you are comparing have different switching frequency (set by the FREQ pin) and different external components, there will be a difference in efficiency as well.

Higher switching frequency can result in physically smaller inductor and capacitors (smaller solution size) but the overall efficiency may be worse.
    It is a trade-off.

You can use the WEBENCH optimization settings dial to optimize the solution and see the trade-off between total solution size and overall efficiency.

    I hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Denislav
