TPS3701: OVP function on VBUS of USB Type-C/PD

Part Number: TPS3701
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TVS3300

Hi, Support team

Customer is looking for OVP fucntion solution on VBUS of Type-C/PD.

The below is my thinking solution.

OVP detection threshold is 24V. UVP function is no required.

Customer application has SINK / SOURCE mode as USB PD.

Do you have any technical concern at the above circuit during SOURCE mode?

And also, do you think that TPS3701 will clear ESD testing, IEC61000-4-2 standard?

If it is not cleared, please suggest some solution to me.

Thanks

Tamio

  • Tamio,

There is no discussion at this time of passing TPS3701 for ESD testing IEC61000-4-2 standard. There are external ESD protection devices that can be added to the above circuit to pass IEC61000-4-2 standard.

An example of an ESD device you can use: http://www.ti.com/product/tpd1e0b04

Please refer to IEC 61000-4-x tests for TI's Protection Devices application note for additional information: http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slva711/slva711.pdf

I would like to learn more about the specific PD controller used along with any other details you can provide to understand if there are technical concerns with the above circuit during SOURCE mode. I will reach out to you via email to learn more about the details. Thanks!

  • Hi, Michael,

Please refer to my mail about business information.

    I added ESD protection device as folloiws;

Since the maximum voltage of VBUS is 20V, I selected TVS3300.

This proposal is to replace a competitor OVP device. A competitor device has Back-to-Back FET switch. But it can't use in system having Sink and Source power mode.

    Thanks
