TPS3803-01 Supply voltage too high

The TPS3803-01 is rated 7V maximum for supply voltage.  If the supply voltage is 10V but the supply current is limited to 2.1ma, what will happen to the device?  Will the device be destroyed or will it not function or will it just operate out of specification?  The datasheet has a max input/output clamp current of 10ma and a max output current of 5ma but no mention of the supply pin.

The 10V supply voltage is not intended, but is possible under certain circumstances.

Thank You.

    Hi Keith,

It is not recommended to exceed the abs max ratings of the device. As stated on page 5 of the datasheet, it may cause permanent damage or affect reliability. You will have to use an SVS with a higher supply voltage rating such as the TL77xx devices.

    Regards,

    Darwin

    Hi Darwin,

Thanks for the suggestion. I reviewed the datasheet(s) and the TL77xx series can be designed-in. The TPS3803-01 is also very robust. With a supply voltage of 10V and a resistor limiting the supply current to 2.1ma, the device has survived temperatures from -10C to 60C.  I am looking for details on its structure and/or process limits to explain this excellent performance.

    Regards,

    Keith
