UCD9090 Error Writing Configuration

We have a new design that uses the UCD9090 sequencer and out of the 7 prototype boards that I have tried to program so far, 3 of them are giving the same error.  The exact error that I am getting from the Fusion Digital Power Designer software is:

There was an error writing your project file's configuration to the device:
wrote 15 of 358 parameters from the project file (343 errors), but could not save the device configuration to flash: STORE_DEFAULT_ALL sendbyte on UCD9090 @ Address 65d error: NACK

The exact sequence of steps I am using to attempt to program the device are:

  1. Connect the USB Interface Adapter to the UCD9090.
  2. Power on the board.
  3. Open the Fusion Digital Power Designer.
    1. It correctly identifies and connects to the UCD9090.
    2. Since the device on this board has never been programmed, the software tells me I don't have any rails defined and asks me what to do.
  4. I select "Import a device configuration from a project file" and click Next.
  5. I select the project file that we have developed and successfully used with at least 4 other boards and click Next.
  6. During the write to the device, there are a massive number of errors in the Error Log.
  7. When I click Next, I am presented with the error message given above.

I have tried the above steps multiple times on each of the boards that have failed and get the same results each time.  Now, given that this is a new design, I can't rule out the possibility of a hardware issue, so I'm really looking for ways to try to troubleshoot this problem.

  • What are the first a few errors?
    I would check I2C waveform first to rule out signal integrity issue.

  • It looks like after writing SEQ_CONFIG [MFR 38,Rail #3], all communication is lost. Are the errors the same every time?

    I would check power and I2C signal first (Is logic high high enough? Is logic low low enough?). Are there other devices on the same bus that can corrupt the communication?

    If you re-open Fusion GUI immediately after the programming failure, can GUI detect the device at the same address?
  • Yes, the errors appear to be the same each time.

    I connected an oscilloscope to the PMBUS_CLK (pin 8), PMBUS_DATA (pin 9), and power supply to the device.  The power supply voltage is always maintained between 3.2 and 3.3V.  During normal communication, the CLK and DATA signals appear to be toggling between the expected levels (0-0.1V low and 3.2-3.3V high).  What I did notice however, is that when the failure occurs, the high levels of the CLK and DATA signals decays from ~3.3V down to ~0.1V over a period of 1.5-2.0ms.  This occurs after about 150ms of "good" communication.

    If I re-open the GUI, it cannot detect any devices until I cycle power to my board.

  • I didn't mention this earlier, but we also have the I2C port of a C6674 DSP connected to the sequencer (in parallel to the USB-TO-GPIO adapter) so that we can perform updates in the field. I have found that if I disconnect the DSP, I am able to successfully program the sequencer on each of the boards that previously failed. Clearly something about the I2C connection from the C6674 DSP is improperly pulling down these signals on some of our boards, but not all of them. At the point that this is happening, the DSP isn't even out of reset because its power supplies have not come up yet.
  • Glad you have found the problem. UCD9090 will not hold down CLK for more than 35ms as it is the max allowed by PMBus standard.
  • I am wondering if there is a recommended way to connect both the USB-TO-GPIO adapter and a separate I2C master, like we are trying to do with the C6674? I'd like to try to avoid having jumpers or something of that sort, if at all possible.
