UCD90160: Gate (F)PWM signals for converters that use combined EN and SYNC pin

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCD90160

Hi,

is there any internal way to sort of AND combine an Enable Signal and a PWM output ?

The MPM3660 ()

would require such a feature when being sequenced and synchronized.

Alternatively I could use and GPO output and use an external buffer with enable and gate the PWM signal externally.

And in general it would be useful/good practice to not drive a clock signal into a yet un-powered / enabled converter maybe ....

Best regards

Bjoern

  • Hi Bjoern,

UCD90160 actuall combine the Enable and PMW function together, but its PWM function just for margin only, you could not use the PWM signal to drive the power stage directly.

UCD90160 is a sequencer and monitor, not a PWM Controller.

    Thank you.
  • Hi Fery,

thanks for the quick answer, but I I beg to differ, unless the data sheet is completely misleading and incorrect.

Quote 1 from the first page of the data sheet:

"Twelve of these pins offer PWM functionality. Using these pins, the UCD90160 offers support for margining, and general-purpose PWM functions."

Quote 2 from the first page of the data sheet:

    "Multiphase PWM Clock Generator

    • Clock Frequencies From 15.259 kHz to 125 MHz
    • Capability to Configure Independent Clock Outputs for Synchronizing Switch-Mode Power Supplies

I am quite sure that I can do what I intend to with a ACD90160 (drive a synchronization pin of an external DCDC converter module) when using the PWM outputs.

And using two output pins per such converter with one being the enable signal for the sequencing and a PWM output with the correct frequency combined with an external AND gate or tristate buffer, IMHO it also would also be possible to both enable the MPM3630 and lock it to the desired frequency, don't you think so ?

As far as I understand the UCD90160 data sheet I can use the PWM for close loop margin control but I can also use it for general purpose PWM. Please correct me if I am wrong there.

    Best regards

    Bjoern

  • Hi Bjoern,

Of course UCD90160 could provide PWM or FPWM, and close loop margin control. Also, you could use the PWM signal to drive Sync Pin of DCDC Converter.

But what you can't do is using these PWM or FPWM signal to drive a power stage directly, because is could not control the power stage under close loop.

    Thank you.
