TPS25942A: Thermal Shutdown

Part Number: TPS25942A

Dear TI,

We using Super Capacitor Charger.

As a result of our review, I have a question about Thermal Shutdown.

On the Datasheet, we inquire about the range where thermal shutdown is not applied at high temperature operation (85 ℃).

At present, we want to charge for about 30 seconds at 5.2V, 1A.
Also, when the high temperature condition is set to 55 ° C, please send us data on possible charging conditions (voltage, current, power, etc.).

  • Hi BJ,

Can you please share more information to suggest the design.
. Is the super capacitor used for backup power OR to serve transient peak currents?
. what is the end equipment?
. what is the value (F) of super capacitor and max. ambient operating temperature
. Is there any requirement on the charging time 30s --> longer than 30 secs is OK?

Please refer app note on supercap charging www.ti.com/.../slva920.pdf for more details.

    Best Regards,
    Rakesh
  • Dear Rakesh,
Thank you for your attention and support.
    1. It is being used as backup power.
    2. It is a black box.
    3. Vinatech : 7.5F / 6.0V (55°C)
    4. Specifications are as follows.
     -. Current Limit – 5.1A
     -.  Vin= 5.1V
     -. Super cap value - 7.5F / 6.0V
      => SUPERCAP 2S MODULE 7.5F 6.0V 13x26x28 R=7.5mm
     -. Charging tine – ≈30secs.
When the high temperature condition is set to 55 ° C, please send us data on possible charging conditions (voltage, current, power, etc.).

  • Hi BJ,

    Thanks for the details.
we don't have the measured thermal shutdown data at 55 ° C but designing the eFuse parameters as per higher ambient temperature (say 85 ° C) condition would satisfy and meet the requirement even at 55 ° C .
Select the soft start capacitor CdVdT as ~90uF. This sets the charging current at ~1A and takes 38sec to fully charge the super capacitor of 7.5F.
Please revert back for any clarification.

    Best Regards,
    Rakesh
