BQ51050

Is it possible to use the BQ51050 for battery management and to supply a system with about I=50mA on average?

  • Gianluca,

The bq51050B is designed to provide a specific current during charge.  The charge current is based on the battery voltage.  The current changes from pre-charge (low battery) to fast charge at the maximum current to taper (nearing termination voltage).  The bq51050B cannot choose which path to send the current.  If the system battery sinks all of the current, the 50mA will not be available to supply the system.

Another consideration might be using a power receiver (bq51013B for instance) along with a charger.  The OUT from the bq51013B can go to the input of the charger and to the system.  In this case, care must be taken to set the charger maximum current to be lower than the maximum of the bq51013B.

For example, if the battery needs to be charged at 500mA, then the charger output should be 500mA.  As long as the bq51013B maximum current setting (via RILIM) is 500mA plus the expected maximum system current (plus any tolerances - maybe 10% to 20%) then the system will operate both the charger and the system.

    Regards,

    Dick
