BQ 500210 and BQ50013

Hi, I need to use Tesla devices to transfer energy through a door, the coils must be eliptics, max 3 cm wide and the cables between coil and driver could be 3 m.

Is that possible and what I have to change to customize this circuit?

  • Gianluca,

The key points for this design will be the thickness of the door (Z-height) and the resistance of the 3-m cables.

The WPC v1.1 spec calls for a maximum distance of a few mm.  In some cases, with good matching of RX and TX coils, I have seen a couple of cm.  But, this is just lab data in an uncontrolled environment.

The amount of power to be transferred is also a concern.

    Regards,

    Dick

  • Thank you Dick.

    We have bought

    BQ500210EVM-689

    and

    BQ51013BEVM-764

and did a lot of tests.

We reached 2 cm distance between TX and RX without loosing connection between boards.

Do you have any analytical tools (or suggestions) to test if a streched coil, for example 25 mm x 50 mm does it works?

  • Gianluca,

2cm is quite good for z-distance.  Is it sufficient for what your system needs?

I have tested many different coils - different shapes, sizes, values.  All of these factors impact the operation.  Other items you can modify that may help with the distance.  The communication can be the first failure point.  Increasing the COMM caps increases the modulation depth which helps with communication - but does impact efficiency.  Also, look at the Cs capacitors to see if these might add efficiency.

Based on my understanding of your system, Qi compatibility is not required so you do have more flexibility in changing some of the parameters.
