BQ50002: Charging keeps dropping out and coming back when above 90% with off the shelf charging sleeves

Part Number: BQ50002
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ500511, ,

I am using the bq50002+bq500511 EVM to evaluate charging of some phones with aftermarket charging sleeves.

I have found for a variety of sleeves with Samsung A5 and various iPhones that when the charging reaches above 90% the phones ping indicating charge has stopped. Within a few seconds, it then pings to say charging started again. This randomly continues.

When I charge the Samsung S5 and Samsung S7 I do not get this issue. The S5 has an aftermarket sleeve but that is installed inside the battery compartment. The S7 has built-in support for wireless charging. It seems to be a pattern for aftermarket sleeves that plug into the USB/Lightning connections.

Does anyone have experience of this? It does not appear to be dropout on the voltage rails. It is not FOD issues as I disabled that to test.

Thanks

Trev

  • Hi Trevor
This may be caused by the high load noise as battery nears full charge and the system load appears on the sleeve typically above 90%. With battery charge low most of the current is going to the charger, input current is a DC level with low noise. As the battery approaches fully charged the system load is applied and the noise is much greater. Depending on a number of factor, phone, sleeve, transmitter, apps running on phone, distance to tower and others the load noise can get high enough to corrupt RX to TX communication and trigger a restart.
The bq50002A and bq50212A may show better preformance.
