BQ51013B: Do I also need a battery management system?

Part Number: BQ51013B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ500212A, BQ77905, BQ25100, BQ51050B, TIDA-00318

Hi all,

I'm working on developing a wearable device and we're utilising wireless charging with the BQ51013B IC receiver and BQ500212A in the charger/transmitter to charge our 3.7V 350mAh non-removable battery.

In order to meet international safety standards, will I also need to include a battery management system such as BQ77905? Upon reading the datasheet for the receiver IC it does not include a BMS in it's circuitry.

Kind Regards,

Andy

  • Take a look at the bq25100 single cell battery charger, also TIDA-00318.  The bq51013B is a 5V supply and cannot directly charge a battery.  The bq51050B is a direct wireless power to battery charger device.

  • Thanks Bill,

I've reviewed the bq51050B datasheet and whilst it performs the roles of wireless receiver and battery charger in one IC I noted that it does not perform the full suite of voltage, current and temperature protections that the BQ77905 does. Would these extra protections be necessary/advisable in an internationally distributed small wearable product (like a heart rate monitor) or would they be unnecessary?

    Kind Regards,
    Andy
  • I would like to suggest Bill's response as the answer however need a response to my follow up question first to be able to full clarify.

    Kind Regards,
    Andy
  • Requirements for international distribution of devices with rechargeable batteries should be reviewed with the appropriate certification group or test lab.  I cannot assist with this question.

Generally speaking we are seeing very small lithium polymer batteries (LiPo) in small devices charged with battery chargers (bq25100) without dedicated external protection (bq77905).  Small batteries are in the range of 350mAh you mentioned.

Problem with the bq77905 is the chemistry ( not LiPo) and mult cell (not 1S).
