BQ51013B: Wireless TX coil on the PCB itself

Part Number: BQ51013B

Hi

I'm Dinesh Katkar and working on wireless charger with PCB coil itself. I'm using bq51013B and wanted to implement its coil antenna on the PCB itself.

My question is do you have any kind or recommendations for such design?

We’re interested in trying to reduce the cost of the BOM, and were wondering whether TI have every tried using PCB Printed coils rather than the expensive ferrite-based coils. I appreciate the field pattern may not be great, but if it works that’s fine. We are actually not interested in Qi compliance either, since it’s a product-specific charger."

Could you please advise on this question?

if not, the main issue I need to pay attention to is its inductance and size? if I achieve it in one layer it will do the work or that I need to pay attention to other things as well?

Looking forward for your positive response !!

Thanks and Warm Regards

Dinesh Katkar

  • Hi
I have tested PCB coil for low power (<2.5W) but they will require a ferrite to complete the coil, copper winding pattern on the PCB and ferrite behind it.
The difficulty with a larger higher current coil is the amount of copper needed for the PCB winding requires large number of layers and thick copper.
  • Dear Mr. Bill,

    Thanks for your soonest feedback!!

I would like to request you to share me any reference design available for the same (<2.5W) Low power only. How to add ferrite to complete the coil ,copper winding pattern on the PCB and ferrite behind it.

If possible can I see your design !!

Looking forward for your positive response

    Thanks and warm regards
