I am assuming, you have written a simple v4l2 sensor driver for your FPGA module. If not, you need to since our capture driver will only interact with V4L2 sub-device driver.

Now under drivers/media/i2c all drivers are of type module_i2c_driver(<driver_name>) but nothing prevents to create a driver which would of type module_platform_driver(<driver_name>).

In the latter case the DTS node would just be at the top level of the tree instead of being under a specific I2C bus nodes. The details of the node itself would exactly the same as with being under an I2C node.
